Charry is a Fiesta® Chartreuse vase that has been traveling the country since Oct. 2009. Its hosts have been dish friends from the Collectible Medium Green message board.

This little adventure was the brain child of Elaine (Stop3). Her idea was to have a vase travel around the country. Those hosting the vase would take a picture with Charry, sign it then ship it to the next person. As Charry traveled around the country, the imaginations and creativity of the hosting homes totally surpassed her imagination.

Charry has attended a New Years party, played at a playground, got arrested, visted the Tunnel View overlook in Yosemite, Pikes Place Market in WA, caught a cold, helped with insurance claims, visited with some of Ms Bea's friends, visited a covered bridge ... and that is just between October 2009 & April 2010.

Charry has now retired in the home of Sallie (fiestasal) in North Carolina.

In celebration of the 10th anniversary of September, 11, 2001, Weimar Porzellan has designed a porcelain lithophanie / lithophane. This beautifully hand crafted piece of Weimar porcelain comes to life with the saying " 9-11-01 We will never forget" when it is illuminated. The back is just as beautiful diplicting the Statue of Liberty, US Flag and the American bald eagle. (photo below) Each lithophanie measures 3" tall x 3.5" wide and comes in its own gift box with candle and a certificate of authenticity.

The Lithophanie is an ancient art form that was signed in 1827 as a patent. The name derives from the Greek lithos - stone and Phanos - transparent, thin, unglazed porcelain, known as a biscuit. (Lithophanie - filigree art porcelain. )

The different light transmission and the heights and depths of each motif appear vivid and moving. Weimar porcelain is one of the few manufacturers producing these technically complex works of art.

Weimar has a 218-year history. It was established in 1790, and it is known for its lavish use of gold and cobalt and ornate surface decoration. Weimar Porzellan manufactures quality porcelain as dinnerware or gift items with a traditional flair in high processing.

The Museum of Ceramics, 400 East Fifth Street, East Liverpool, cordially invites our visitors to participate in the first ever Collectors' Choice event on Saturday May 29, 2010 from 1:30-2:30 PM. This event will especially appeal to area collectors, family historians, and everyone who is proud of the tri-state area's ceramics heritage.

Audience members are invited to bring their favorite pieces of area ware, and talk about the history of each piece, and why it is important. Those who do not collect ceramics will still enjoy learning more about the collections of others.

Collectors interested in learning more their favorite pieces are invited to contact the museum staff ahead of time. The staff can assist with questions of the age of the pieces, as well as providing more information about the potteries involved. Every person who brings a piece of pottery to the Collectors' Choice event will be given the opportunity to receive a free 5x7 greeting card afterwards.

The event is free to all Museum of Ceramics members. It is free with the cost of admission ($4 adults, $2 students) for everyone else. All ages welcome. Calling all Fiesta® tablescapers .... still need pictures ...

I need tablescapes in each of the 27 Fiesta colors. The tablescape needs to be primarily one basic Fiesta color (place setting) with a few Fiesta accessory pieces in other colors or all one color. But the tablescape needs to be prominently the one basic color.

We still need photos showing, white, black, apricot, lilac, persimmon, gray, juniper, cinnabar, sunflower, plum, heather, evergreen, ivory, chocolate, lemongrass & could use some more pictures in some of the other colors as well.

I will be using the photos on our website to show customers what each color looks like in a table setting. So the photo does not need to show the whole table or have a vintage tablecloth. It can be a setting for one person with accessory pieces or a setting for two. What ever turns your creative fancy.

Your name will appear as the photographer / collector on the website / photo.As a special thank you, we will be designing an ornament that will be given to the owners of the photographs that we use on our website. If you submit more than one photo & we use more than one of your photos, you will receive the same number of ornaments to photos that is used on the website (not the number of photos submitted.)

Homer Laughlin, Hall China reach agreement

NEWELL - Homer Laughlin China and Hall China will operate under common ownership under an agreement reached on Thursday.
Homer Laughlin's Corporate Executive Officer Joe Wells III called the agreement "a step we believe will strengthen both brands in the marketplace and solidify the future for employees, distributors and representatives.
Wells said he is excited about the common ownership for several reasons.
"The Hall brand name is recognized under the largest United States manufacturer of specialty chinaware, under this agreement we can proudly offer it to our customers as well. This partnership will add size and strength to America's place in the international china manufacturing world, and we will be able to offer the best of both companies' product lines and specialties, enabling us to work together in a challenging economy," he said.
John Sayle, chairman of the board and corporate executive officer of Hall China, noted, "Homer Laughlin and Hall China have enjoyed a collaborative relationship that goes back more than 100 years ... In today's marketplace, with significant foreign competition, the two companies will have a stronger presence and be more competitive operating under common ownership, and this will help preserve jobs within our community."
America's largest tabletop manufacturer, Homer Laughlin China Co. became the last major domestic pottery with the closing of several major competitors, most recently Syracuse China in March 2009.
"Those competing brands are not gone, but their American factories and the American jobs they created are," Wells said. "Since our beginning - and especially since its complete ownership of the company in 2002 - it has been our pledge to continue producing quality, American-made china and provide jobs for potters of the Ohio Valley. We see this move as a continuation of that pledge."
The Homer Laughlin China Co. traces its beginnings to 1871, when two brothers from East Liverpool, Homer and Shakespeare Laughlin, formed a partnership to sell pottery that was made in factories located in their home town.
The pottery industry in East Liverpool had begun in the 1840s with the manufacture of yellow ware from the rice deposits of local clay. By 1870, consumers' tastes had shifted to the increasingly popular white ware being imported from England and the Laughlin brothers took advantage of City Council's offer of seed money to anyone who would produce white ware.
The brothers quickly gained a reputation for quality and, in 1876, their white granite ware won first place in the United States Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia.
In 1889, William Edward Wells, a young bookkeeper from Steubenville was hired to manage the books of the growing establishment. He and a financial partner, Louis Aaron, Pittsburgh, purchased the business 28 years later, in 1897, from Homer Laughlin, who by that time was its sole owner.
Major growth ensued. In 1907, the company was moved across the Ohio River to a larger tract of land and created a subsidiary company to develop the area into a town that would become Newell, W.Va.
Expansion continued as the company thrived. By 2002, ownership of the company was shared by third, fourth and fifth-generation members of the Wells and Aaron families and others. In an effort to consolidate resources and provide improved direction, Joe Wells III and his sisters, Jean Wicks and Elizabeth McIlvain, purchased the interests of the other stockholders. In June 2002, Wells was elected president and chief executive officer.
Specializing in high-fired, lead-free glazes with an Alpha Aluminum body, Homer Laughlin grew to its present size with more than 900 skilled workers in a 37-acre facility.
The Hall China Co. was founded by Robert Hall in August 1903 in East Liverpool following the dissolution of the two-year-old East Liverpool Potteries Company. Hall died just a year after launching the company.
His son Robert Taggart Hall took over the company and almost immediately began developments to introduce the single-fire process, which had first been used centuries earlier by Chinese potters during the Ming Dynasty, 1368-1644 A.D.
In 1911, Hall and his staff came up with a glaze recipe that fused together the white body, color and glaze using a single-firing method. The new glazes allowed the creation of brilliant colors never before seen on American china.
In the mid-1920s, the directors of Hall China began an association with the Jewel Tea Co. to produce an exclusive line of dinnerware. For all the major refrigerator manufacturers, Hall also produced china pieces including pitchers, china boxes for leftovers and butter and cheese dishes.
Hall China celebrated its 100th birthday in 2003.
"The decision for common ownership brings together the most respected names in American china production," Wells said. "Hall's durable 'oven to table' products will fit perfectly with Homer Laughlin's mission to supply a quality product at a fair price and to continue to manufacture in the United States."

Fiesta introduces another bowl to their dinnerware line ...

It was much to our surprise when Sid was Fiesta® shopping one day this week & he noticed a new bowl in the mix of all the color. It appears that Fiesta® is adding an individual pasta bowl (HLC # 977) to go along with their ex-large pasta bowl & shaker set. The bowl is styled to match the over-sized bowl. From what Sid has learned, the bowls are going to be exclusive to Macy's. The bowl measures about 8-3/8" across x 2-1/4" high. As one of the photos below shows, a 19 oz. medium bowl fits nicely inside this bowl. I think HLC has a hit with this bowl. Oh yeah, these stack wonderfully.

Wow, what a week and our legs are so tired. I think next year I'm going to take my pedometer to see just how many miles we walk. We found a couple of very interesting items to sell. We found a portion controlled design plate set, a cute party tray that holds your drink & snacks. (More info when we launch the lines) We'll be adding some wonderful new dinnerware lines like Tracy Porter, Vera & Chef LaLa. We also met Chef Suvir Saran who designed the American Malasa line that we carry. Then of course, we found out the latest information from Homer Laughlin's Fiesta® line.

Homer Laughlin is also launching another dinnerware line called America's Diner - Bistro Collection. This new line is microwave, dishwasher, freezer, oven safe & lead free. HLC has taken the Fiesta® glaze colors & applied them in stripes & checkered pattern to this line so you can accent your Bistro table with your Fiesta® dinnerware items. It will be available in Chocolate, Turquoise, Scarlet, Cobalt, Cinnabar & Black. There will be a 10-5/8" plate, 9" luncheon plate, 9"x13-3/8" oval platter, 24 oz. jumbo cup, 8-5/8" jumbo saucer, 13 oz. mug, 18 oz. nappy bowl, & 55 oz. bistro bowl.

Above, is a picture we took with some Fiesta® ornaments that we brought with us, to see how the new color Paprika looked with (clockwise) Scarlet, Chocolate, Persimmon & Tangerine. You can see from this photo that Paprika does not look like Persimmon at all (as some thought). In my opinion, Paprika will be a wonderful color to blend all the latest Fiesta® glazes together when Marigold is released next year. And if you are into the Southwestern decor, this color is right on.

I need tablescapes in each of the 27 Fiesta colors. The tablescape needs to be primarily one basic Fiesta color (place setting) with a few Fiesta accessory pieces in other colors or all one color. But the tablescape needs to be prominently the one basic color.

I will be using the photos on our website to show customers what each color looks like in a table setting. So the photo does not need to show the whole table or have a vintage tablecloth. It can be a setting for one person with accessory pieces or a setting for two. What ever turns your creative fancy. Your name will appear as the photographer / collector on the website / photo.

As a special thank you, we will be designing an ornament that will be given to the owners of the photographs that we use on our website. If you submit more than one photo & we use more than one of your photos, you will receive the same number of ornaments to photos that is used on the website (not the number of photos submitted.)

eBay's new photo policy .... :(

is actually eBay's new photo theft policy. How many of you sellers spend hours taking photos for your auctions? How many of you put watermarks or copyright info on your photos? It will not matter with eBay's new photo policy. eBay has figured a way to get around all the photo theft complaints, by offering a new program. The clincher is, you are automatically opted-in to this new policy.

This new policy is not just bad for sellers, but for buyers too. Now you will have to ask another question of the seller, is the item in the photo the "actual" item being auctioned off. So sellers get ready for even more emails.

naamah_darling put it the best with instructions on how to opt-out ....

"If you do not want eBay to make the photos you upload to all of your future auctions available to other users in a sort of catalog process, you need to go change your settings now, before August 31st. If you opt out after then, any photos you upload between the 31st and when you opt out will still be eligible for inclusion in their "catalog."

In order to opt out of this so-not-okay process, do the following. I've broken it down exhaustively. Hopefully your eBay pages look like mine.
1) Go to your eBay summary page ("My eBay").
2) On the left-hand side, there are three tabs that say "Activity," "Messages," and "Account." Hover over the "Account" tab.
3) A drop-down list will appear. Move your mouse down to "Site Preferences" and click.
4) You will be taken to a page with a list of site options for selling, shipping, and listing. About the sixth from the top is "Share your Photos." Click on the word "show" on the right hand side next to this option.
5) The box will expand, and if you are opted in, "yes" will appear. If you are opted out, "no" will appear. A small "edit" link will appear below the "show" link. If you want to change the settings, click "edit."

7) If you want to opt out of the program, check the ticky box on the left-hand side next to the text, then go down and click the "submit" button.
8) You will go back to the settings screen you were just on, and there will be a green check-mark and a confirmation message. Go down to the "Share your Photos" option again and click "show."
Your setting should now appear as "no."

I am sure that this will be a useful feature for some people, for some items, but the automatic opt-in is not okay with me at all, as I don't want my photographs used to illustrate someone else's auction for a different item, not for any reason whatsoever. "

After thinking long & hard I have decided I'm retiring from being the Fiesta® Ornament Queen.

I will be systematically selling off the majority of my personal collection on eBay (just-dishes) & on our website. (colorfuldishes.com)

I have had numerous request to sell ornaments outright, but to be fair to all my good customers & friends I have decided to sell what ever I am going to get rid of on eBay / website & not do any outright sales.

I do not want to have anyone upset with me because I sold a specific ornament to one person & not to someone else. We are a small community of friends & I hope everyone will understand.

I will continue to keep the ornament web page updated, etc., so keep the pictures of your collections / displays coming. Ornament reference pages

We've just added a new line to our collection of companies. All U Can Handle has some of the most whimsical products you will ever see. Just Dishes Amazon Store - Dignity Line

We are proud to announce that our Amazon.com store has Dignity dinnerware. This dinnerware has been designed for the physically disabled. The overall function of this line has been researched by Wade Ceramics (the manufacturer). I personally have been testing this product line. My 81 year old mother is legally blind & suffers with tremors on her right side. She would always spill her drink on herself with conventional mugs & the food that would ended up on the floor after each meal ...

Well my mother was pretty hesitant to try out the new items. She used her bone china mugs no matter what. And let me tell you, she swore by those mugs. She would not even use our Fiesta mugs ... nope it had to be her floral bone china mugs. However, once she used the feeder mug with a straw, she was in love. She uses it for her coffee in the morning (without the straw) & her drinks for the rest of the day with a straw. She just loves not having to hunt for the straw any longer and not spilling her coffee on herself.

Well after she tried the mug for awhile, I suggested trying the plate. She was a little more open to this since the mug worked so well. Yup, she likes the plate as well. It is so much easier for her to get her food on her spoon / fork than with a regular plate. No more using her finger to help put food on her spoon / fork.

The best part for me with both these items is ... I do not have so much cleaning to do. :)

If you have someone with a disability, you really need to check into this dinnerware. My mom say, the line is very well named "Dignity" , it helps the disabled keep their dignity longer.

At this years HLCCA Conference in Pittsburgh, PA - Red Striped Fiesta on Ivory was introduced. It makes a beautiful table. It was made in a 10 1/2" dinner plate, cup, saucer, ring handled mug and 10" vase. The attendees of the conference were in awe of the tables. A wonderful time was had by all. If you have never been to one of these conferences you really need to attend.

Well the time has come for Homer to go to a new home. I am selling my Homer Laughlin China 1 of a kind - prototype Harlequin donkey. This donkey was made from the vintage HLC Harlequin animals mold & then dipped in Fiesta® Post 86 plum glaze. There were about 20 +/- of these animals auctioned off at the 2002 HLCCA conference in New Orleans, LA. There were cats, fish, donkeys & ducks done in Fiesta® post 86 glazes of plum, persimmon, yellow (pale), cobalt and cinnabar. This cute little one of a kind donkey comes with his own certificate from Homer Laughlin China certifying that it is a prototype ("2002 Prototype Animal #228") with the HLC seal. We are back from this years Home & Housewares show in Chicago. As usual Homer Laughlin China announced their newest color to their Fiesta dinnerware line. It is called Lemongrass.

We are very excited about a new dinnerware line that we will be offering. It is made by Wade Ceramics & the line is called Dignity. This line is made for the handicap & having an 80+ year old mother who is visually impaired I can not wait to try this product out to see how much it will enhance her ability to feed herself. As soon as we get more information on this new line we will post pictures here on our blog so everyone can see why we are so excited.

We also spoke with other dinnerware lines that we will be carrying in the very near future.
